Wagering Requirements Explained for Canadian Players
Step-by-step math on how wagering requirements work, including game-weighting, expected loss to clear, and break-even bonus thresholds.
Wagering requirements (WR) are the math gate between a bonus offer and cashable funds. The bonus value minus the expected cost of clearance determines whether a bonus is worth claiming. This guide walks through the math step-by-step with Canadian-dollar examples.
What Is a Wagering Requirement?
A wagering requirement is the total bet volume you must place before bonus-funded balance becomes withdrawable. Expressed as a multiplier (Nx) of either the bonus amount or the deposit + bonus combined.
Example: 35x wagering on a C$1,000 bonus = C$35,000 of total play required before withdrawal. If the WR applies to deposit + bonus combined (rarer but common), C$1,000 deposit + C$1,000 bonus × 35x = C$70,000.
Game Weighting
Not all games contribute equally to wagering clearance. Standard weightings:
| Game type | Typical weighting | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | 100% | Default. C$100 wagered = C$100 toward WR. |
| Roulette | 5-20% | European 5-10%, American 10-20%. |
| Blackjack | 5-10% | Often excluded entirely for live tables. |
| Baccarat | 5-10% | Low-edge games heavily weighted down. |
| Video poker | 10-50% | Varies widely. |
| Live dealer | 0-50% | Often fully excluded. |
| Progressive slots | 0-100% | Some excluded from bonus play entirely. |
Expected Cost of Clearance
The math: expected clearance cost = (required wagering) × (game's house edge).
Worked example: Crownplay 250% × C$1,800 deposit = C$4,500 bonus. Wagering at 35x = C$157,500 turnover. At 96.5% RTP slot play (3.5% house edge), expected loss during clearance = C$5,512. Net EV: C$4,500 bonus − C$5,512 expected loss = −C$1,012. Negative.
Different example: Madcasino 100% × C$750 = C$750 bonus. Wagering at 25x = C$18,750 turnover. At 96.5% RTP slot play, expected loss = C$656. Net EV: C$750 − C$656 = +C$94. Positive.
Break-even Wagering Multiplier
The math: at slot 96.5% RTP, every dollar wagered costs 3.5 cents in expected loss. C$1 bonus needs (1 ÷ 0.035) = 28.6 dollars of wagering to break even. So a 28x or lower wagering multiplier produces positive net EV at typical slot RTP. 30x is roughly break-even. 35x+ is negative EV.
Max-bet Rules During Clearance
Typical max-bet during clearance: C$5 per spin or 5% of bonus amount, whichever is lower. Exceeding the cap voids the bonus and all winnings derived from over-cap bets. Always check this before clicking spin.
Validity Periods
Most welcome bonuses expire 7-30 days after activation. If you cannot clear the required wagering within the window, both bonus and bonus-derived winnings are forfeited. Plan around realistic play volume.
